Mersey me! Liverpool couple win a £1MMillion EuroMillions prize

But after returning to Liverpool and discovering they’d won an incredible £1MMillion EuroMillions prize, the lucky couple wasted no time visiting a jeweller and trying on a genuine red sparkler.

Margaret, 60, bought a EuroMillions Lucky Dip before heading off to the Greek island. While away, she received an email from The National Lottery telling her there was news about her ticket. But as players are unable to log onto The National Lottery app from abroad, she assumed it was a small prize and went back to enjoying her holiday.

Arriving home at 4am, Margaret put a wash on and went to sleep. It wasn’t until the next morning that she opened The National Lottery app.

Margaret said, “I saw I’d only matched one number, and it took me a few seconds to realise it was the Millionaire Maker code. I said to John, ‘I think I’ve won a million pounds!’

“I called one of our two sons to say I’d won. When he arrived, I ran out of the door shouting ‘I have, I’ve won.’ He told me to get indoors before everyone found out!”

Margaret called The National Lottery to get the ticket details checked. She said, “The lady on the phone told me to get a pen and a piece of paper. She said write this down - one, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero. That’s what you’ve won, £1MMillion. I was literally shaking; my hands were shaking.”

The couple continued to struggle with the idea they’d become National Lottery millionaires. But when Margaret came out of the shower and found a notification from her bank confirming a £1MMillion deposit, they realised it wasn’t a dream.

Margaret and John plan to look after themselves and their family. Helping their sons with houses and cars is a priority and they’re looking forward to taking another holiday in August. The destination has yet to be decided but turning left on the plane and enjoying a five-star experience are both on the cards.
